SJHA is working hard to understand the diverse experiences of families and players across the association. Feedback that we receive will help us modify, enrich, and/or remove aspects of the program in order to make this the most transformational hockey experience for all players. We will be sending this survey out one more time at the end of the season to understand trends over time. We are truly so appreciative of the time you take to fill out this survey honestly.
Here are our survey key takeaways from the 2025-2026 Mid-Season Survey:
- 217 respondents for this survey (41% of the association). We are able to draw broader conclusions about the association with this volume.
- About 35% of the association has not had an individual meeting with their coach. This is down from 52% in the Early Season Survey. In this survey 43% of the association reports having one meeting, our coaches are dedicated to getting that number to 2 meetings before the end of the season!
- 27 players reported either disagreeing or strongly disagreeing that they enjoy playing for their Head Coach (12% of respondents). 24 out of these 27 reported having either one or zero individual meetings with their Head Coach. This is almost one in every eight kids, so likely two on every team! We still have time to get these meetings set and connect with players. Coaches will be asking what they can do to better support players so everyone can finish the season strong.
- 28 out of 35 goalies either agree or strongly agree that they are getting the right skill development this season. We will continue to incorporate more opportunities for live action play vs. shooter tutor dummy time, proper rest intervals between reps, and more instruction (players get instruction for each drill, goalies get instruction for each drill).
- 53 out of 66 female identifying players agree or strongly agree that they are getting the right skill development and challenge this season. The positivity was spread out through all age divisions and levels of play. We will keep challenging the girls!
- 70% of the association either agrees or strongly agrees that SJHA provides the right amount of skill development opportunities throughout the season. This is down from 78% in the previous survey. The few who strongly disagree are on the Tier II side, and Development Rep (86% agree or strongly agree) out-performed Rec (71% agree or strongly agree) and Tier II (50% agree or strongly agree) in this category. Skill development and win/loss record are often hard to parse during the leadup to the State Tournaments, but we will be speaking with coaches at Tier II about how to make sure skills are still a strong aspect of weekly practice.
- Building New Skills (37%) ranked highest for the parents' marker of a successful season with Having Fun (30%), Learning Life Lessons (17%), and Moving on to the Next Level (9%) behind in order. There is no clear breakdown or pattern when this information is cross-referenced between Rep/Rec, Male/Female, Skater/Goalie, level of play, or answers to questions about coaching or skill development. All demographics and experiences are represented in each of the parents' markers of a successful season. Making Friends and Getting Exercise scored very little and Winning Games did not have a single response.
- 43% of the association was either neutral or dissatisfied with the picture day product. We will be using this information to contract and plan more appropriately next year. We apologize to all those who did not like their product, we know that you care about these photos.
All in all, we believe the data show our program is in a good spot heading toward the end of the season. But we cannot rest on our laurels. In fact, we need to push hard to connect with kids and families all the way until the end. We need to make sure we are adding appropriate challenges, marking successes, staying outside of our comfort zone as leaders, and building bonds with the team to end on a high note.
Parents, please speak with your coaches to find ways to mend fences, advocate for kid's needs with compassion and appreciate for all the hard work coaches already do, and keep SJHA leadership informed about how we can help. We are in the middle of the growth path! It can be sticky at times, and navigating how to support players through a process, where we put a lot of emphasis on the product, is really challenging. But we are a team! Let's work together!
