SJHA is working hard to understand the diverse experiences of families and players across the association. Feedback that we receive will help us modify, enrich, and/or remove aspects of the program in order to make this the most transformational hockey experience for all players. We will be sending this survey out two more times throughout the season to intervene on immediate results and understand trends over time. We are truly so appreciative of the time you take to fill out this survey honestly.
Here are our survey key takeaways:
- 206 survey responses (42% of the association). This volume allows us to extrapolate the results of the survey to be a representation of the entire membership experience.
- 182 out of 206 either agree or strongly agree that they feel challenged and motivated by their Head Coach. SJHA majorly emphasizes the importance of relationship building for coaches and we are clearly seeing that play out positively in the early survey results. Nice work coaches!
- We are not reaching our membership through social media and the newsletter. Less than half of the association checks our social media or newsletters for information about the association. In the winter we will be exploring more ways to digitally connect with members.
- Over 90% of the association is very likely to recommend SJHA to their friends and family. With a super important Try Hockey For Free event coming up soon, we need as much word-of-mouth marketing from you as possible. Please share our upcoming event information via social media to your networks! Your positive testimonies are what will help SJHA stay healthy and grow.
- About 40% of the association has not yet had their early season individual player meeting with their coach. From the data, this seems to be randomly distributed around the association (in other words, it's not as if the younger the player is, the less likely they have had a coach meeting). The conclusion we are drawing here is that we will need to follow up individually with every coach about their plans for early season player meetings.
- 25 out of 31 goalie respondents either agree or strongly agree that their practices are challenging; and, 25 out of 31 goalie respondents either agree or strongly agree that they are receiving the right amount of skill development in their overall experience this season. We aim to close the gap with upcoming Goalie Skills Clinics, but we are also happy that goalies are, in general, feeling the love.
- Out of 53 responses from players who identify as female, 51 responded that they either agree or strongly agree that they feel proud to be a part of the SJHA community. 42 out of 53 female identifying players either agree or strongly agree that they feel challenged mentally and physically during practices. Growing the girls game is wholly dependent on the positive experiences of our current cohorts of female identifying players. If we can continue to drill down on what the girls need and find ways to provide those needs on a daily basis, we will be able to add more and more girls to our program over time.
- 72% of the association either agrees or strongly agrees that SJHA provides the right amount of skill development opportunities throughout the season. Just shy of 15% either disagree or strongly disagree and 13.6% are neutral. Comparing this with other surveys from previous seasons, we have majorly closed the gap for skill development. On average, the disagree or strongly disagree section was over 30% in previous surveys. When searching for correlations with other answers or demographics in this survey, we found that a few specific Recreational age groups were most likely to be neutral or disagree about skill development. And, though there were very few respondents who do not enjoy playing for their Head Coach (3.4% either disagree or strongly disagree), those who are neutral or dissatisfied playing for their coach are also likely to be neutral or dissatisfied with the skill development opportunities thus far in the season. We will be speaking about practice planning and instructional methods in our next Coach Development Workshop, which will be undergirded by the conclusions drawn from this survey.
